Junk Journaling: Made the journal, Now what?

Now that you have made your Junk Journal what do you do with it?

Once the basic structure is created, participants can add “ephemera”—fun elements like stickers, tags, pockets, and other decorative touches. The purpose of these journals can vary widely, from daily planners and memory books to unique art pieces or even gifts. Each journal is a reflection of the maker’s creativity, blending recycling with personal storytelling.

This process offers a fantastic opportunity to repurpose materials while tapping into your creative potential. It’s also a great way to develop skills like binding, decoration, and collage, all while making something beautiful and meaningful.

  1. Old Magazines & Books: These can be used for pages or decorative elements.
  2. Junk Mail: Any colorful flyers, postcards, or envelopes that can be upcycled.
  3. Scissors: To cut materials to the desired shapes and sizes. Slide cutters are great too.
  4. Glue: Strong adhesive or Mod Podge is essential for sticking papers and embellishments together.
  5. Acrylic matte medium: gel preferred but the more liquid is good too.
  6. Decorative Supplies: Stickers, stamps, fabric scraps, or any embellishments you wish to add to your journal.
  7. Papers for Extra Pages: This can include scrapbooking paper or recycled paper if you need additional sheets for your journal.
  8. Bits of fabric, lace or trims. Doilies, paper or thread.
  9. Photos, ticket stubs, letters, any memorabilia you have. Make copies if you don’t want to use the original.
  10. Paper clips, brads, old/junk jewelry.
